INFOE Switzerland recently moved from the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology in Zürich to the Institute of Social Anthropology at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and established collaboration with the Center for Development and Environment CDE, associated to the Institute of Geography, University of Bern.
The reestablishment of INFOE has led to some changes, e.g. guidelines as well as the organization structure were adapted. INFOE aims at working as a transdisciplinary network acting at various universities. Action anthropology remains our historical legacy but we open up to include other disciplines and approaches. The mutual understanding and exchange between indigenous people and other groups shall further be encouraged. The ideas and visions of indigenous people remain an important framework for our activities, but we further enlarge our focus on other affected groups even if they are not labeled as ‘indigenous’.
In autumn 2011, INFOE organized the student course ‘Mining, Transnational Companies and Local Populations’ in collaboration with Prof. Tobias Haller from the Institute of Social Anthropology at the University of Bern. As result of this course, an INFOE working group on mining was created and will continue reporting on the topic in 2012. Interested people are encouraged to join or to create new working groups covering other important topics in the field of Action Anthropology.
